Dear Dyer Families,

It is with a profound sadness that I announce my decision to leave South Portland and my position as Principal of Dyer Elementary School. Eleven years ago this district selected me to serve in a leadership role which has provided incredible opportunities too numerous to mention. I have been honored to serve all communities and continue to be proud of my association with an organization that truly is committed to children.

The Dyer community is my family and my loyalty to each member of it knows no bounds. I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the entire staff because at Dyer each adult, in whatever capacity he/she might serve, touches the lives of children in such positive ways. They are a caring, dedicated and professional team of colleagues with whom it has been my humble honor to serve. I have full confidence that they will continue the great work that has come to define us.

I also wish to acknowledge you, my parents within my Dyer family. For your support of our work with the children and your willingness to serve as our partners in your children’s learning, I will always be truly grateful. When I have proudly delivered our annual State of the School address, I know that our success as a learning community is owing to your active involvement with us. You are invested in education and always ready to step up to the plate when we need anything. That unwavering support makes such a difference and I trust that it will continue. Certainly the current economic climate is forcing some serious deliberations and I encourage you to be involved in that process. There is a budget workshop tonight at Dyer at 7:00 following the PTA meeting at 6:00.

My heart, however, is most heavy since this decision takes me away from my children. I know each of them by name and I know their stories. I know their special gifts and I know heir spirit. I know that I am a better person because of them, individually and collectively, and forever I will cherish the memories of each child. Thank you for sharing them with me. In the weeks and months remaining I will find the strength to speak with them personally about my new adventure so that they will feel comfort in knowing I am okay. Right now I am aware that many know on some level, but we must stay the course. Great teaching and learning must continue and our standard of excellence must not be compromised because of my decision.

Thank you for welcoming me to South Portland and trusting me with the leadership of a great school. I remain confident that this district will continue to define itself with an unrivaled standard of excellence. Despite the challenges ahead, and there will always be challenges, this district has outstanding leadership at every level. From Central Office to the School Board, to school administrators, to Transportation, Maintenance and Food Services staff, to every leader in every classroom, you will find folks who serve because they care and because they believe in “enriching lives through quality learning for all”. I know you will be there for them as you have been there for me. Simply put: Canada beckons and I am answering the call.

Sincerely,

Colleen M. Fleming, Principal
